Pharmacy Shop Fitout basics

Are you planning to open a pharmacy in Brisbane? Unlike many retail stores, the design of a pharmacy involves consideration of much more than shop fitting. Brisbane pharmacies require separate areas for dispensing and retailing functions.

The dispensary area of the store has some highly specialised needs. You’ll need to consider secure storage, refrigeration, the flow of scripts, the location of computer terminals and printers, the design of the service counter, customer seating and other practical, functional matters as well as local planning laws and the requirements of regulatory authorities.

In the retail area of a pharmacy you’ll be looking to maximise your use of space. Pharmacies sell a mixture of types of merchandise and need a variety of storage and display solutions. Some products are fast-moving consumable items like toiletries and everyday health products that customers prefer to choose quickly, while others are gift lines and cosmetics that customers like to spend handle, examine and consider before purchasing. The layout of your store needs to accommodate a flow of customers who move quickly through the shop, at the same time as encouraging browsers who move more slowly and are likely to make purchases of high-margin merchandise.

When it comes to shop fitting, Brisbane pharmacies need to accommodate a range of merchandise that comes in a variety of weights, shapes, sizes and containers. When you’re fitting out a pharmacy retail area, look for pharmacy shelving that suits a diverse range of merchandise and is also strong and attractive. Bethel Shopfitting World offers a range of heavy duty pegboard steel shelving that is popular with pharmacists throughout Australia. The shelving bays are designed in double sided, single sided and end arrangements, with a base shelf and three upper shelves; they are made from heavy-duty metal with a powder-coated finish in a light neutral colour.

Talk to us if you’re designing a retail pharmacy. In addition to getting the benefit of our   many years of experience in shop fitting, Brisbane pharmacists can be sure to find quality pharmacy shelving at unbeatable prices.

Supermarket shelving systems and store layout

When designing a supermarket it’s important to plan carefully: the layout you create and the shelving systems you use to store and display merchandise plays a crucial part in the financial performance of your enterprise. One of your main aims is to design a store that provides your customers with an enjoyable shopping experience and keeps them coming back week after week. However, retaining customers and maximising sales are not your only goals; you will be acutely aware of the importance of a store environment that allows you to control operational costs and provides better gross margins.

Bethel Shopfitting World specialises in quality supermarket shelving, and our outrigger supermarket shelving systems have been installed in large scale retail stores throughout Australia. Things to consider when planning shelves for retail stores

When designing a retail store it’s important to consider the layout of the display area before you start to think about the type of shelves and other shop fittings you need.

If your store sells quick-choice items like groceries your shop’s layout should be designed for easy movement and functionality. A store selling more expensive merchandise should encourage browsing behaviour so that customers move more slowly through the store have space to linger while they consider their purchase choices.

There are a number of ways of approaching store layout. Supermarkets and convenience stores are often laid out as an array of lanes running parallel to the longest walls, but diagonal lanes are sometimes used to improve visibility and traffic flow. In many stores the shop fittings and shelves are arranged around the edges of the store, leaving an expanse of space in the middle of the retail area. Other retail designers like to combine shop fittings in unexpected ways, creating little spaces within the store that surprise and interest customers.

Having considered the layout of your store, your next task is to decide on the type of shelving to be used. Shelves around the walls of the store may be either fitted directly to the walls or in single-sided bay units, and double-sided shelving bays are used in the middle of the store and to form supermarket lanes.  End shelving is often used to display merchandise that is being featured; a customer moving through the store is more likely to pause at the end of a bay of shelves to pick up an item displayed on end shelves.

In addition to the style of store shelving you should give some consideration to height. Do you want to use high top shelves for overstock items? How does the lighting in your store affect the height of shelving you choose, and vice versa? Do you need to be able to adjust the spaces between shelves to accommodate merchandise of different sizes?

The layout of your store – the positioning of counters, shelves, racks and other shop fittings in relation to the shop’s entrance door – strongly influences your customers’ experience of your store. Plan the store layout carefully to make the best use of your retail space.

Looking after the back room: storage racks

When many people think about retail store design, the first thing that springs to mind is the sales area, the part of the store that customers see. No one would deny that an attractive, functional retail area is an important part of the customer experience. However, the “back room” where stock is stored also has a part to play in making your store’s operations efficient and profitable.

These are some of the things that need to be considered when designing the layout of a shop store room:

  • The total amount of stock to be stored in the back room, and the size and weight of individual items and bulk packs, will determine the type of storage solutions to be employed. Storage racks are suitable for a wide range of merchandise.
  • The function of the room determines the layout. A room that is used for picking and packing needs a work space or bench in a convenient position, while a room that is used purely for storage might call for a different design.
  • Leave room to manoeuvre in your store room. Consider the height of racking and whether step ladders will be needed to reach upper shelves of storage racks.
  • Floor surfaces should be in good repair and easily cleaned.
  • Give some thought to your stock control methods when planning the positions of storage racks in your store room.

For a small retail store, a well-organised store room makes the whole operation run more smoothly. It’s better for staff morale, and increases profitability by making stock control easier and reducing wastage. At Bethel Shopfitting World we offer storage racks suitable for all types of products –foodstuffs, clothing, hardware, pharmaceuticals, jewellery or anything else that needs to be stored in a retail shop.

Our storage racks are selected for practicality and value. They come in flat packs to reduce shipping costs, and have been designed for easy on-site assembly. We source high quality products at factory-direct prices that offer the best value for our customers. Whether you are refitting an existing store or fitting out a new retail store, it makes sense to pay close attention to the store room. Don’t let the store room become an afterthought; have store room needs at the top of your mind when you’re designing a retail store.

The eyes have it: appealing to the customer’s visual sense with retail display

Effective retail merchandising is all about appealing to the senses. The yeasty aroma of a bakery attracts a customer who had no intention of buying bread that morning, and hearing a favourite tune played encourages someone linger longer in a store. The most important sense for most retailers, though, is sight.

The unique look and visual feel of your retail display is one of the things that can set you apart from your competitors and benefit your business by attracting customers and retaining their interest.

  • To attract potential customers to your store, create visually appealing displays, with engaging colours and effective stock arrangements.
  • To keep potential customers in your store, design customer traffic flow to encourage them to see as much of your merchandise as possible.
  • To maximise sales, strategically direct shoppers towards a specific retail display such as new season arrivals, or an area where high-margin products are displayed.

Use your retail display to your advantage. When deciding what merchandise you want to feature, how much shelf space a product will get, and where in the store it should be displayed:

  • Avoid giving a cluttered appearance.
  • Place an interesting, striking or appealing product where it can be seen from outside your shop.
  • Use the spaces at the ends of shelving bays to feature targeted merchandise.
  • Place popular or targeted merchandise between knee level and eye level.
  • Place profitable products at eye level.

Display related items of merchandise together to maximise sales.

  • Encourage add-on sales by grouping similar products together, for example winter gloves and scarves.
  • Encourage companion sales by grouping related but different products together, for example a display of table linen, crockery, cutlery and glassware.
  • For maximum visual impact, remember the rule of three: the same merchandise but in three different sizes of the same colour, three different colours of the same size, or variations of this theme.

We have a wide variety of free-standing racks, stands and retail display shelves to suit a multitude of retail purposes.  Bethel’s shop fittings can help you to highlight the visual appeal of your merchandise and maximise sales opportunities.

Use display cabinets to showcase beautiful merchandise

Are you designing a store that sells valuable or delicate items? Glass display cabinets allow beautiful merchandise to be seen at its best and jewellery stores, art galleries and specialty stores often use glass cabinets to display their wares.

Glass display cabinets have many advantages:

  • Security: small valuable items like jewellery are clearly visible to customers but safe from shoplifters.
  • Visual appeal: displaying beautiful wares on glass shelves allows them to be viewed from all angles; glass cabinets often have lighting at each level to highlight displays.
  • Safety: delicate objects are displayed prominently without the risk of being damaged or broken by being handled indiscriminately.

Our glass cabinets complement our range of glass-fronted shop counters. We stock several styles of glass display cabinets.

  • Fully visible tower-style glass showcases (GS-T-19) that allow merchandise to be viewed from four sides.
  • Fully visible tower-style glass showcases (GS-TS-19)incorporating a lockable storage cabinet.
  • Luxury fully visible glass showcases (GS-V-19G)with a variety of backing options including glass, mirror, and board and slat panel.
  • Luxury fully visible glass showcases with lockable storage cabinet and a variety of backing options including glass, mirror, and board and slat panel.
  • Tower glass showcases and luxury glass showcases all have down lights and spotlights fitted at each display level to avoid lighting blockage.

We can also supply customised glass display cabinets: choose from a wide variety of sizes, colours, light fittings and shelf heights. We can provide cabinets with drawers, light boxes and other options to suit your requirements.

Glass cabinets keep your stock safe from damage and theft, and present beautiful objects to maximum effect. Consider using glass display cabinets if you are designing a store that sells jewellery, art works or other delicate and valuable pieces.

Choosing customer-friendly sales counters

When planning a retail store layout the design and positioning of sales counters are crucial. The sales counter should be positioned so as to encourage your customers to circulate through your store and have maximum exposure to your merchandise. While the counter is often positioned near the front of a store, especially in self-service shops, it’s important to avoid placing your counter where it’s the first thing customers see as they enter the store. Because people tend to move in a clockwise direction (from left to right), it’s best not to place your sales counter on the left of the entrance door.

The counter gives your customers an impression of the store’s efficiency and so should be well maintained and customer-friendly. There should be sufficient space for customers to place their purchases on the counter top. The sales counter and cash register is where your sales staff spends a lot of their time, so your counter should be staff-friendly as well as customer-friendly. Choose a counter with a cable hole and space underneath the counter top for stationery and other supplies so that the top surface is kept free of clutter.

It’s important for all of the elements of your counter to harmonise with your store’s décor and theme. We have several styles of counters to suit a variety of retail environments.

  • Our Point of Sale range SW706 and SW708, finished in white or beech, has flat counter tops and open storage compartments under the counters.
  • Other Point of Sale counters have recesses for cash registers and the counter top is finished in brushed silver.
  • Our confectionery display counters encourage impulse purchases. These counters have a glass section in the counter top for displaying high value stock. These are perfect for convenience store and service stations.
  • Our luxury counters are both functional and beautiful. They feature glass display sections and are fitted with castors, allowing movability and flexibility.

Well-designed and attractive counters can have a significant impact on your customers’ experience. To ensure that your store attracts and keeps good customers, it’s important to give a lot of thought to the style and positioning of your store’s counters.

Keeping your shop displays organised

If you run a retail shop that sells a lot of different products, you may be aware of the challenge involved in keeping your shop displays organised. Products can easily become mixed up with each other, and very similar products can be hard for customers to differentiate. Shelf management tools are one way of keeping your shop displays organised.

The benefits of shelf management tools include:

  • improved presentation
  • better organisation
  • better division of similar products
  • easier stocktake

Magnet dividers

Magnet dividers are a type of shelf management tool that can be easily attached to any type of metal shelf. They can be used for holding small items that may otherwise become mixed up, such as pens and other stationery, hair accessories, small toys, or very small electronics products. Magnet dividers feature mesh walls that allow products to be easily viewed.

Shelf dividers

Shelf dividers are plastic dividers that can be spaced as required along a shelf. They are transparent, meaning that they do not disrupt the visual flow of your merchandising, but are still able to keep items neatly divided and organised. Shelf dividers are common in convenience stores, supermarkets, gifts and souvenir shops, home and kitchenware shops, and discount shops that sell a variety of small products.

Using shelf dividers

Shelf dividers vary slightly in their application depending on whether they are magnetic or self-adhesive. Magnetic shelf dividers can be simply placed on the shelf as required, while self-adhesive products are applied by pressing them to the shelf rail.

Shelf dividers are a simple but effective tool for keeping your shop displays organised, and may help your staff and customers more easily find your stock.
